That's funny, it's always been free for me.. I've never BOUGHT a copy of GNU/Linux in my life. Why should I?
I DONATE, but I don't expect to gain ownership of anything by doing so.

Why exponentially? Why not linearly or even geometrically?

There's plenty of ways into Linux machines.. Yes it's more secure than windows, but don't go around wagging your finger (and your dollars) in people's faces.
By the way, I've NEVER EVER EVER gotten a windows virus, and I use it as much as I use Linux lately, with no AV software.
