What does this mean? Does the kernel have an ego and it's running around pounding its chest?

According to your opinion. Novell hasn't done anything of the sort. All they've done is pay a lot of Free Software developers a ton of cash and employment. How do you expect them to migrate their people to Free Software desktops if you don't migrate their propietary stuff over first, and then shift the mindshare inside and outside of their company.
Did you ever spend 3 hours talking to Novell people about the power of X. Let me tell you, that is not an easy conversation. And these were the guys assigned to the Gnome Develoeprs Summit.
Show a little patients. Being the second largest desktop implimentation and the fastest growing platform isn't good enough for you? They has a large install base which paid for the aquisitions of SuSE and Ximian. They can't just slash it all, and they are going to market it in a traditional fashion as they migrate everyone to Free Software. This is not Caldera. Save your hosility for SCO.

I don't know what the fuck open source is, but it most definetely is a marketing gimick. As for Free Software as a business model, Novell ***IS*** blazing a path. They've freed YAST and Connector and are investing heavily in the marketing of Free Software and Open Standards.
