Yes
But they happen, even in the older machines, the cmos get infected. In fact, there was one manufacturer a few years ago which shipped a bunch of infected chips sets out to the public. All bios have some capacity for memory recall, otherwise they would have no options.
That being said, I doubt that is his problem.
