After much re-reading of the NYLXS email archives from 2002 thru current
2004, I feel (with Mike Richardson's, approval of course) NYLXS needs to get
moving on with several outstanding projects. The projects' in question are
the following:
1. Freedom-IT 2005. We've talked about it, did a weekend planning session
and even got Adam to get Non-Profit pricing on advertising from Viacom. Now
lets get really busy on this. We need to cement relations with other groups,
institutions, get business contacts involved etc...
2. Software Freedom Day 2004 - Its coming soon so lets all get our speeches
into Mike Richardson so that we can proceed. Additionally, we need to create
and/or get CD Giveaways for the event. Mike R., lets go with the plan to use
your House of Worship to stage the Brooklyn Event. We can always throw
together secondary alternate sites like Shopping Malls and Plazas. We also
need to video tape the demos (listed below) as soon as possible. Rob Marino,
please contact me with dates when we could use your equipment at Concord.
I will liase with the people who have originally called the event and check
into CDs, Flyers etc. I will also contact some friends Upstate to see if we
can have a Presence there as well to hand out info et al....
This demo will cover the following topics.
1. What is Free Software? (Michael)
2. What is Open Source Software? (Michael)
3. What is NYLXS, INC.? (Ruben)
4. What is a GNU/LINUX DISTRIBUTION? (Ruben)
4a. The GPL and Other Licenses. (Ruben)
4B. Other Free Operating Systems (BSD, Darwin etc) (Evan)
5. Free Software and the PC. (Steve)
6. Free software and the Mac. (Steve)
7. Free Software and other Platforms. (Steve)
8. Support for Free Software. (Adam)
9. Documentation where to find it and how to use it.(Adam)
10. Using the GNU/LINUX SUSE LIVE EVALUATION CD. (Michael)
11. Running windows programs in GNU/LINUX.
11a. Wine.
11b. Crossover Office.
12. VM Ware.
13. Open Office for Windows.(Evan)
14. The Gimp for Windows.
15. Testimonials. (Michael)
16. Books to read. (Adam)
17. Websites to check out. (Adam)
All written speeches into Mike Richardson by June 20, 2004 please...I want
to have this video taped and available for burning to CD by July 30, 2004 at
the latest.... Mike, you will have my speech no later than June 15, 2004 for
both 4B & 13.
3. Educational Initiative - Rob, Call me! Lets get those teachers into my
office for a meeting next week or following at the latest. We need to get
this off the ground....
4. Inservice - People, I have not seen an Inservice for a very very long
time. Rob you owe us an inservice on LDAP and Samba 3.0 so your up first.
I'll do an OpenBSD Inservice and we can always ocax Ruben into
something.....
5. Installfests - People, People, People! We can use those donated boxes as
giveaways for an installfest or for the Educational Imitative but we need to
get moving...
6. FSI Classes - We are heading into the Summer and need to schedule Classes
ASAP. All who would like to and are able to teach a class, please check your
schedules and lets do it! We need to publicize as well for a minimum of
three weeks prior so that we can get students lined up...
