Student Linux Project Mar 17th, 2004
by Jim Anderson
A team of students at Western is engaged in distributing one of the most powerful Enterprise level Linux systems available - free of charge.
The Ignalum Linux Project (ILP) student initiative is designed to give opportunities to faculty and students at Western to participate in promoting the Linux Open Source concept.
The objective in giving it away free is to promote interest in the Linux system which can save information technology costs for small to medium-sized businesses.
"The goal of this project is to showcase the immense talent offered by students and faculty at Western", says Daniel Ho, third-year computer science student and a project leader. "This opportunity gives people the ability to join the project as contributors gaining experience in programming, project development and integration."
The project involves students from computer science, engineering and administrative and commercial studies. Other team members include: Michael Pietrantonio, fourth-year engineering, Regan Pestl, fourth-year administrative and commercial studies, and Yue Shao, master's computer science.
Currently the Ignalum Linux distribution is in beta or final testing stage and available for download on the Ignalum Web site at www.ignalum.com. The name Ignalum derives from Ho's Chinese name (Hoh, Gna-Lum).
Ignalum Linux is a new Linux distribution system, which showcases an easy-to-use intuitive graphical environment that offers compatibility with Microsoft Windows.
The new release is "one of the most powerful Linux systems currently available, with advanced usability features such as single sign-on authentication for a mixed Unix-Windows environment and Ignalum's advanced Internet-sharing and Ipv6-over-NAT capabilities," says Ho.
Pestl says the group is interested in promoting the Open Source concept in the computer world. "We have everything you could possibly want for free."
The team is also developing partnerships and recently signed an agreement with the Open Support Guild for distribution of their program.
Ho says the team wants to involve more students in the project from many disciplines in product development, marketing, and building strategic partnerships.
The team is also seeking donations of computer hardware and funds.
