SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] Orgcom Report to NYLXS
|
This last Sunday I attended on behalf of NYLXS the Orgcom meeting, The meeting began at around 1:00PM and ended close to 6:00PM.
Orgcom is struggling hard with organizational issues and how it wants to form itself as a legal entity. The meeting was attended by MarK Huagara, Monjay Settro, Brett, Lyn, Seth, Jay, David Chan and 2 other individual, one a functioning secretary and the other whos name is Andrew, as well as Darios from the Linux Society, who I had the pleasure of sitting with and talking. Jay stayed only for about 1/3 of the meeting.
Those who where there had a vote that "Orgcom" was a group, and that I could be a member of the 'group'. Then they voted on a name for the expo, which is "Free as in Expo". They voted that they should look to try to piggyback onto another 501c3 for legal status, but they haven't decided which group they might piggyback on. They approved the last minutes through a hard negotiation involving several voices, mostly Lynn and Seth.
It's my opinion that orgcom has some deep seated problems, but it is making some progress and has a chance to succeed. They need to maintain a stricter adherence to Rodgers Rules and to move the meeting faster. And they need help from serious and experienced organizers.
My original recommendation to NYLXS on this group remains. We should try to encourage more experienced individuals to engage with Orgcom and have their groups represented. More specifically, I think Adam's group, Windows refund.net, David Sugar through his affiliation with the FSF, and 2 NYLXS members can greatly help this group move forward, especially as they are working on a charter, and developing legal status.
I can see the possible upside of the development of Orgcom as being a large asset to the Free Software Community, but it is essential that no individual set of members of joined organizations be allowed to commandeer it's mechanisms and potential. And for this reason, I'm strongly in favor of NYLXS remaining productively engaged in the Orgcom efforts.
The next few meetings are especially essential in the development of the group, and if Freedom-IT and Orgcom will be able to cooperate. I suggest that we dedicate ourselves to helping them through this birthing process.
In this regard, I suggest that we have a Freedom-IT planning meeting on Saturday Night at Tech Night to discuss this further.
Ruben
