Have you tried or searched the YDL list? I've never had a problem with cds in YDL 2.3 and kernel 2.4.20 on my TI PowerBook. I have had lots of the described problem in MAC OS9.2. I usually have to restart the computer with th cd in place.
My PB has a DVD.
