This is closer to the truth than other ideas what the expo is for. Ultimately the goal of LWE is for the profitability of IDG. Initially, the show had a great balence between business and communitee related functions. One of the wonders of Free Software is that the line between enterprise interests, developers, and end users is particically erased. The initial shows had a good balence between the community aspects and salesmanship for large corperations. Large corperations view clients as an exploitable resource. The difference in the Free Software community is substantial and it is very difficult for people steeped on corperate culture, let alone MBA's and Marketing experts, to open their minds to a different kind of relationship between a large offering of products and its user base.
Beginning last year, it was obvious that the balence is disrupted, and although LWE still allows for a large amount of cross-polination, it is now, IMO, failing as a tool for the community. Just looking at the shrinking .org pavillian and the awarding of MS for Unix tools, it becomes clear that New York needs a different kind of show which re-establishes the center of the the event.
In this light, this is why David Sugar is trying to get us to create a new show for next year, one which is more in line with the expected goals of the the whole community. And hence, we are going to Lake Placid next Weekend to lay down the fundemental plans for such an event.
I hope that people take the oppurtunity to meet with us there to help shape a successfull program.
