NEW YORK (December 18, 2003) - Daniel Pipes, the director of the Middle East Forum and a leading American commentator on the Middle East, is joining The New York Sun as a weekly columnist, the newspaper announced today.
Mr. Pipes, appointed by President George W. Bush to the board of the U.S. Institute of Peace, is a scholar and widely published author. He joins the Sun from the New York Post, where his column had been appearing weekly.
The Pipes column, which in the New York area now appears exclusively in the Sun, has become the leading weekly dispatch on the Islamist jihad against the United States, Israel, and the free world. The column, which provides both reporting and commentary, also appears in the Jerusalem Post and a number of other newspapers.
"For years we read Mr. Pipes every week in the New York Post and are now thrilled to be able to deliver his column to our readers," said the editor of the Sun, Seth Lipsky. "His column has become a national institution -- a weekly scoop of substance on a beat that couldn't be more important to New York and the country."
Mr. Pipes will join a growing lineup of distinguished columnists appearing in the Sun regularly. Among them are Errol Louis, who takes a liberal view of local, national and international events; J.P. "Fipp" Avlon, the former chief speechwriter for Mayor Guiliani; Tina Brown, the former editor of the New Yorker and Vanity Fair, who writes on media moguls and markets and other elements of the culture; Mark Steyn, whose acerbic comments on political and cultural trends evoke both a smile and serious thought; Amity Shlaes, who writes on the political economy; William F. Hammond Jr., who offers a weekly perspective on Albany; Andrew Wolf, who writes a weekly column on education and other issues in the city; Alicia Colon, who brings a conservative sensibility to reporting on local and national issues, and the Knickerbocker, a diary of life in the City edited by Gary Shapiro, a polymath.
The Sun's growing lineup of columnists coincides with its emergence as the fastest-growing major-metro daily in the United States, with audited circulation as of September up 125% from the year earlier figure. The newspaper is now guaranteeing a rate base of 45,000.
Mr. Pipes's website, DanielPipes.org, is the single most accessed source of information specifically on the Middle East and Islam. It offers an archive and a chance to sign-up to receive his new materials as they appear.
Mr. Pipes was one of the few analysts who understood the threat of militant Islam ("Unnoticed by most Westerners," he wrote in 1995, "war has been unilaterally declared on Europe and the United States"). The Boston Globe writes that "If Pipes's admonitions had been heeded, there might never have been a 9/11." The Wall Street Journal has called him "an authoritative commentator on the Middle East." MSNBC describes him as one of the best-known "Mideast policy luminaries."
He received his A.B. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, both in history. He spent six years studying abroad, including three years in Egypt. Mr. Pipes speaks French, and reads Arabic and German. He has taught at the University of Chicago, Harvard University, and the United States Naval War College. He has served in various capacities at the Departments of State and Defense, including vice chairman of the presidentially-appointed Fulbright Board of Foreign Scholarships.
Mr. Pipes frequently discusses current issues on television, appearing on such programs as "ABC World News", "CBS Reports", "Crossfire", "Good Morning America", "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer", "Nightline", "O'Reilly Factor", and "The Today Show". He has appeared on television networks around the globe, including the BBC and Al-Jazeera.
Mr. Pipes has published in such magazines as the Atlantic Monthly, Commentary, Foreign Affairs, Harper's, National Review, New Republic, and The Weekly Standard. Many newspapers carry his articles, including the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, another ninety dailies, plus hundreds of websites. His writings have been translated into 19 languages and he has lectured in 25 countries.
Mr. Pipes has written 12 books.
