The Critical Place of Desktop Computing in the Free Software Movement: Why Redhat is wrong about the GNU/Linux Desktop Over the last few years increased rumbling has been heard in both the Free Software movement and from outside the movement that the GNU/Linux Desktop is dead, not viable, and even not worthy of centralized attention by Free Software businesses and groups. This is absolutely incorrect. Free Software desktops are today ready for the end user, and general public, and from a business prespective, is the most important piece of the IT infrastructure for the short and long term health of Free Software, and the general public.
9:30 Nat Friedman: Development in the GNOME Desktop development environment
10:00 Richard Stallman:
The Free Software Movement and the Challenges it Faces Today
And how about this abstract:
The free software movement was launched 20 years ago when we undertook to develop a free software operating system, GNU.
Seven years ago, the free software community faced a danger created unknowingly by the KDE desktop project. KDE was free software itself, and attractive to users, but could not run on a free platform: it depended on the non-free Qt library. GNOME was founded specifically to solve that problem by providing an unencumbered replacement for KDE.
That particular problem disappeared when Qt became free software, but other similar dangers exist today -- as well as many other kinds of dangers. Our community today faces a wide range of threats, that we must confront and overcome if we are to realize the goal of fully utilizing our computers without losing our freedom.
