As I discussed with Evan on the phone, this is a very bad decision
by red Hat for their own health. They are underestimating the importance
of the market share and marketing value that they get from Red Hat box sets
and distribution.
I would venture to say that today there would not BE a Red Hat corperation
if it was not for the marketing value that they recieved from their RH linux
distributions. I view this as a reactionary move by the company in light of
bad recession that the nation has undergone since the attack on New York on
September 11th, 2003. But I see a real uptick in the IT market place, and if
anything, even if this decision makes sense, it is 6 months too late.
Where does Red Hat think it is going to get the kind of publicity and free press
that they got in the market place which was generated by their distribution? With
radio and TV advertising?
Have they followed what is happening at SUN?
