Dear Mike
I got your voice mail this evening, and Steve Milo has also gotten it.
I can hear they stress in your voice and I can understand that your somewhat fustrated in helping us out. I want to say that I really apreciate all you've done for this conference, and everyone at Brooklyn College has been wonderful.
I'm sorry for any confusion which has been caused. It's been my fault for not being more available for everyone as their schedules can make it.
As you might know, I'm not a paid employee of GNOME, CUNY or NYLXS, but a volutneer. I give a lot of time for community projects, not just this one, but many others. But in addition to my work as a programmer and Sys Admin, I'm also a Pharmacist, and in this economy I've needed to do a lot of Pharmacy work to feed my family. When I work in the Pharmacy, and I float from one Eckerd Pharmacy to the next every day, I'm completely out of touch. I'm very sorry about that.
The original plan with Brooklyn College was to set up in SUBO and the Library, with SUBO being used Saturday and Monday, and the Library being used on Saturday. However, SUBO has been waiting for the go ahead from IT for the event, and Nat, who I understand has met with people in the Brooklyn College IT department, has determined that SUBO has only token ring on the upper floors. As I understand the messages, IT will not permit us to put any of our own equiptment in the Library or SUBO, although the library can take some 135 wireless access connects with passwords which they will give us.
NYLXS can work with NYWIRELESS and set up wireless in both SUBO and the Library if we had permission, with a closed wireless setup. As I understand this from Nat in the message he left me just prior to taking leave, IT is not willing to let us set up an ethernet bridge on the token ring, or to set up at the library.
The GNOME people from MIT in Boston feel that internet access is very important for the developers at the conference. I've thought that we might be able to set something up from the internet cafe in SUBO if need be, or to move the actual conference to the Library.
But until I got your voice message tonight, I haven't recieved any solid feedback other than Nat's message. So I've started to work on Plan B for the conference, which is holding the bulk of the event at the NYLXS education center on Kings Highway. Holding it at the University is by far my first choice.
In addition, IT feels it needs to have 2 people at the library when we use that access point. In this regard, I can understand their desire to have their people available.
Long before I was involved in these computer events, I created a wonderful website called Brooklyn On Line (http://www.brooklynonline.com). I did a lot of work with Professor Arther Bankoff from Brooklyn College on the site. Later on, as I created NYLXS and became increasingly involved in Free Software, I've always looked for ways to promote Brooklyn, and Free Software together. Holding this event at Brooklyn Colleged seemed like a perfect way to tie both of these passions into one great event for both the Free Software and the Brooklyn Community. But I seem to not have the ability to get all the necessary parties on the same page.
I believe that this conference can be very good for the prestige of the College, and we've worked with CUNY before on very successful events. Over 60 people have already registered for the conference from South America, Spain, Canada, Mexico, England, and accross the United States.
The Conference itself is being partly funded by the GNOME Foundation through the generosity of the Novel Corperation and other spouncers. However, our overall budget, minus the NYLXS dinner, needs to be less than $5000.00. I thought we would be able to make this cost without a problem. However, the costs keep creeping up.
Aaron Tenenbaum is very concerned that BC can not hold such an event because of it's limited resources. I have always viewed BC and nothing but one of the finest institutions in the country. But BC has a lot of individuals involved in making decisions, and when I tried to bridge all these different needs, I failed in becoming an adequate organizer and advocate for the institution.
If we can get this conference into either SUBO or the Library under budget, NYLXS and I myself, are extremly interested in doing anything necessary to make everyone happy at the GNOME Foundation and at BC. If not, then I hope that we can still use SUBO for the opening ceremonies which would include the opening remarks for Richard Stallman and some of the GNOME leaders, and then move the rest of the conference to our private educational facility.
If we have permission, we can certainly set up any networking needs that we have.
I'm copying this email to Mitzu at Subo, Ben at NYWIRELSS, and NYLXS.
I can be reached tomorrow from noon to 5pm at 1-718-382-0585. And thank you for ALL your help.
Yours Truly
Secretary NYLXS
