SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] Microsoft agrees to TRON tie-up
|
Hey, here's some more software and code MS can "borrow".......
Microsoft agrees to TRON tie-up Correspondents in Tokyo SEPTEMBER 26, 2003 US software giant Microsoft will tie up with a Japanese non-profit group to develop next generation operating systems for everything from refrigerators to mobile phones. The tie-up would enable appliances, cars and other gadgets worldwide that operate on the group's free TRON operating system to eventually work like personal computers. "In the end, household appliances that use TRON will be able to use Microsoft's operating system and other applications," chair of the industry group T-Engine Forum, Ken Sakamura said.
TRON, which stands for "The Real-time Operation system Nucleus", operates in some 60 per cent of the world's billions of electronic appliances, said Jun Yamada, a spokesman for the Ubiquitous Networking Laboratory, which is part of the forum.
"This might be useful say if you wanted to put an internet browser on your refrigerator to look for recipes," Mr Yamada said of the partnership.
The forum is developing a next-generation TRON system called T-Kernel to speed up the development time for new electronics products. The group will make the source code for T-Kernel available in November, Mr Yamada said.
The agreement will allow the Windows CE .NET platform for digital devices to work on top of T-Kernel.
"This foundation software that allows Windows and TRON to co-exist should be the seed for the next generation industry," Susumu Furukawa, vice-president of Microsoft's Japanese operation said.
