SUBJECT | Re: [hangout] RE: GNOME Conference Plans

Guys, I think you might be thinking of this too much as a conference. It's really just a chance for the GNOME developers to be in the same place. If there's more than a few scheduled presentations, that's too many. The mistake I made in organizing the last summit was having too much on the schedule. The more unstructured this is, the better.
What's key is to have a number of breakout rooms (3 or 4 maybe) and to have a larger hacking room with net access in all of them.
I would have someone introduce the event for 30 minutes (I did this at the last event) and then have someone close it. And then you MIGHT have one more talk.
Richard is fantastic, but having him speak to 200 people who are already active free software contributors about things they probably already understand might not be the best use of the time. Richard has spoken at GUADECs in the past. At the last summit, we tried to bring in an "outsider" -- Rob Pike -- who gave an interesting talk about an itneresting technology. If we're going to have a keynote at all, I would much prefer it to be an outsider along these lines. Someone we can learn from because they are different from us.
The summit is typically focused heavily on technical issues and the GNOME project's organization issues at a given point.
Best, Nat
