Dear Dr Tenebaun:
I'm contacting you as follow up to the preliminary conversation you had with
Murray Gross.
I'm the Secretary of NYLXS, Inc, the largest Free Software organization in the
area. Free Software is the term used for the creation and distribution of software
using licensing which enables developers and users to retain and legal rights to
affect the development and ussage of the software. The Free Software movement was largely
begun by Richard Stallman, at MIT, with the GNU project and the Free Software Foundation.
Many valuable products have been developed under the GNU program, and others like it, including
the GNU/Linux operating system,the gcc compiler, EMACS, the Apache Webserver, Open Office.org, and
many many others.
NYLXS is an Educational non-profit, incorperated in New York City which has developed many programs
for the education of the public about Free Software, and general computer sciences. We have done
many things to promote the education of the public, including two large demonstrations and business
events with the help of the CUNY graduate school, and Laguardia College.
One of the most important of the Free Software projects is the GNOME project. Gnome is a desktop
application for the X windows system which is used in a large number of Free Software desktops.
It has a complete widget set and interprocess communications layer for stadardized programming for
GNU/Linux and other systems. It is a very successful program and companies like Novel, Red Hat and
IBM are heavely involved in it's success and development.
The GNOME Foundation wants to have a developers summit in New York City and NYLXS has been asked to
organize the program. We would like to have the program at Brooklyn College. Brooklyn College is an
idea setting because of your superior computer science department and because NYLXS is largely centered
in Brooklyn. The conference will be flying in people GNOME developers from all over the world. David
Sugar, one of the primary forces behind the development of C++ and the BAYONNE telephoney project is leading
this effort. We would like to ask you for space for 3 days of this conference, and we are attempting to
schedule it at a time when Richard Stallman can be in New York.
This is a current summary of the program.
Purpose
The GNOME developer's summit will provide a forum for North American GNOME
developers to gather and share ideas and skills among each other and with
other potential GNOME developers.
Organizers Background: NYLXS, New Yorks largest Free Software educational
corperation is organizing this event for the GNOME Foundation. NYLXS has
organized such events several times over the last 2 years.
The GNOME developer's summit will be organized and supported by NYLXS, with
help from other free software organizations in the New York metro area.
NYLXS has a successful history with organizing free software events,
including the annual Free Software Business Expo held in conjunction with
CUNY university.
Committee
An organizing committee to support this effort has been created and is
composed of the following individuals:

Schedule
The event will be held over a two day period in the middle of November. The
exact choice of dates will depend on venue.
Attendance
This event will be open to the public with some meetings closed for developers, NYLXS Members,
and Brooklyn College Students. A web site will be established for
the event and to support pre-registration so that we can better determine
attendance in advance. Will there be any changes to attend?
Venue
The most likely venue will be to use a hall and set of rooms from a local
university, such as CUNY, NYU, or New School. The venue has not been selected
yet. There will be seperate rooms available for individual meetings and
Birds of a Feather conferences, as well as a room for the conference proper
and for use by speakers, equipped with AV equipment.
Speakers
While there will not be a heavy emphasis on speakers, there will be some, all
of whom are GNOME related. I expect we will have 5 to 6 speakers for the
event, all of whom will be housed for free at the NYLXS "guest facilities".
Potential speakers initially include David Sugar, to speak on GNOME
telephony, Janina Sajka, to speak on GNOME accessibility, and Richard
Stallman, to speak on why GNOME.
Housing
We will locate hotel accomidations that can be recommended to out of state
attendees. This process has not started yet, nor will it until the venue is
finalized.
Sponsors & Costs
The principle issue of cost revolves around the venue finally selected. At
least some local universities may require insurance bonds for the event.
Ideally, it would also be best if we could pay for travel as well as for
housing of our more distant speakers. All of these things would require
additional funding through event sponsors.
Escorts
Volunteers will be provided as escorts to meet people at the airport and to
bring people to and from social events, etc.
Social Events
There will be a GNOME summit dinner, and perhaps some other form of social
event. The exact nature of this, and whether it will be an additional cost,
will largely depend on sponsors. Among the possible venues includes Brooklyn
Colleges Performing Arts Center, BAM, Broadway, dinners, and more.
