SUBJECT | Re: [hangout] IBM TO KICK OFF WITH LINUX PLAY

I had a chance to see this commercial when I attended LinuxWorld in San Francisco a few months ago and I'll be the first to say that I was not impressed. Though I understand what IBM was going for, I fear that viewers will be left with an impression that Linux can be described as "a child" who is young and impressionable, requiring guidance and supervision. On the other hand, Redhat's Jeremy Hogan created a commericial of his own and had a chance to show it off during one of the keynotes. Jeremy's video was more "mature" and delivered a much more inspiring message. Though I'm not clear on Redhat's plans for marketing this video, Jeremy promised that I'd be able to get my hands on this masterpiece soon enough. I'll follow up with him today.

" " IBM will unveil a surreal, 90-second advertisement touting the operating " system Linux, in hopes of catapulting the geek favorite into the public's " consciousness. " " This year marks the 10th anniversary of the release of Linux, an "open " source" system that was created by Linus Torvalds, a programmer from " Finland, and distributed for free over the Internet. IBM calls " it a "movement" - as if Linux were a political party and not a piece of " code. " " Linux backers have enjoyed some recent publicity coups. Some European " governments, worried about a Microsoft monopoly or fueled by " anti-Americanism, have switched to the Linux system.
