I'm very sorry to announce to everyone that the Killarny Rose has closed it's doors at 35 years of Business.
Anyone who had been party of NYLXS and NY Fair Use will imediately know what this means to our group. In the end, the cigerrette ban has ended what was the lynchpin to our organizations developement, and you have to point a finger at the current Mayor for ending an important institution because of a personal tirade.
On September 11 through 13th, 2001, the Killary Rose was one of the only instititutions in the Wall Street area to have been serving food and providing shelter for workers stranded in the area after the mass murder at the World Trade Center.
The Killarny Rose was the site of most of the NY Fair Use meetings going back several years, and it was the place of the NYLXS inservices, the Annual Dinner, and many other events. We planned our business expo's at the Pub, and as recently as last week had an important board meeting there.
In the history of NY, much of American Democracy was formulated in the Pubs and Bars around lower Manhattan, and the Killarny Rose was in this tradition. In fact, the first New York City City Hall was is such a Pub slightly more than a block away from our home.
I have personally been attending the Pub since 1977, and my kids have had soda there with me after meetings.
The FSI, NY Fair Use, NYLXS, the FSCC, and more have all made the place home at different times. For a while, the Killarny Rose was the most happeningest location for Free Software in the city.
I'm very sorry for Noel, and the rest of the staff, who had always made us feel at home and amoung friends
The Killarny Rose 35 years of Service RIP August 2003
