You may be thinking of Dave Teuretsky of CMU.
Felten's team showed that Windows doesn't NEED IE to operate. Later, he cracked the "SDMI challenge" and was threatened with DMCA prosecution if he presented an academic paper on it. Of all the people fighting the DMCA, he's far and away at the top of the list as far academic credibility and visibility goes.
