Please check this letter before I send it to Mandrake-Linux.
My name is Michael L. Richardson, I am currently President of NYLXS, INC. (New York Gnu/Linux Scene). NYLXS is decicated to promoting Free Software in the NY Area. I have used Mandrake-Linux vers 7.1, 7.2, 8.0, 8.1, 9.0 and now 9.1. In the Users guide for ver 9.1 section IV.11 introduction to Mandrake control center, Whats in DrakConf is written "Mandrake Control Center is Mandrake Linux's main configuration tool. It enables the system administrator to configure the hardware and the services used for all users. The tools accessible through the Mandrake Control Center greatly simplify the use of the system, notably by avoiding the use of the evil command line."
I take execption to the phrase "notably by avoiding use of the evil command line". At the heart of GNU/Linux Systems is the use of the command line. For a System Adminstrator using GNU/Linux the main tool is the command line. This is not windows where users are not allowed to use the command line. Using the command line gives you the freedom to learn how to use your computer (not just the proprity progrqams someone else wrote. You lean how the various parts of the computer interact, how to write your own programs. When using the command line you are not limited to predetimered conditions imposed by someone else (With Free Software under the GPL you are free to modify programs to suit your needs) or write your own.
The pharse "evil command line" has no place in Free Software or any system using Free Software it is a Redmond phrase. As you have made your distros easier to use you have been taking away choices (during the install you no longer have an expert choice. Oh it says expert but when you click it it does not give you any choices. The wizards leaves nothing to be done. It leaves me wondering if Mandrake-Linux is perhaps headed towards becoming the next Redmond clone? The command line is ManDrake-Linux's saving grace without it I would not be using Mandrake-Linux.
The pharse "notably by avoiding use of the evil command line" must be removed.
