SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] Intro video
|
I am planning to put together an introduction video that can be used for nylxs.
I have come to understand that nylxs stands for more than free software alone, so I wont expect one video to be able to explain everything that nylxs hopes to accomplish. The purpose of this video is exactly what I've called it, an introductory video. I hope to introduce the concepts of what nylxs stands for and briefly tie that with how important it is for society to stay informed of advancing technology.
Here are some thoughts on the matter that I think can be used in a script. Some of these thoughts are my own some I have grabbed from the membership orientation handbook:
What is a computer? A computer is a device that facilitates human communication. Imagine having in your posession a device that can expand your ability to communicate. A device that can be used as a tool to educate you, to make you smarter and more informed, a device that can expand your productivity without making you work harder. As you may be aware such a device already exists and is being used by millions of people around the world. Sadly a large percentage of those people have been lulled into a sense of complacency and have forgotten just how useful a computer is. Whats even worse is that there are entities out in the world that want computer users to believe that a computer should be nothing more than a source of entertainment. We let these entities into our home and think nothing of it. These same entities who want to severely limit and control our ability to use a computer.
Our generation has been lucky enough to have been born at one of the critical junctions in human history when the decisions we make today, and the technology which we are developing will alter permanently the fabric of our reality as a society and a civilization. With the explosive growth of digital information, we have in our grasp today the ability to break long standing barriers to individual and social progress through the wide spread of inexpensive information and communications. Computer technology has lowered the barrier of entry for nearly every individual on the planet to become a full participant in the global economy and are responsible members of the world community.
What is NYLXS? NYLXS is a non-profit education corporation incorporated in 2002 in the State of New York. It is run by an elected board of members drawn from the general membership. The organization is established for the education of the public about free software. The primary mission of NYLXS is education. We educate the public about free software and the importance of free software and the importance of free software in the three pillars of modern society: The sphere of business, the sphere of the body politic, and the sphere of education. The policies of nylxs are designed to promote leadership in free software ideals. NYLXS is in the business of education as outlined and as a basis for its basic charter with the State of New York.
NYLXS is also in the business of developing leadership, both for the present and for the future. Leadership skills in free software advocacy is the primary membership benefit. New members are trained to lead by sharpening their skills in the public presentation, in the organizational skills, in writing skills, in technical skills, in colaboration skills and in political skills. These skills are developed by applying lessons to real world problem solving.
What can NYXLS offer to you as a member? Nylxs offers you as a member the opportunity to make a difference in this world. Nylxs was established as a vehicle for you to make meaningful contributions to others. In exchange we hope you find comradery, friendship and a sense of individual accomplishment. However, nylxs is largely focused on contributions that we make to the public.
How does one become a member? (This would be a good opportunity to refer viewers to our website).
Thoughts and input please, make it soon. I would like to put a video together before I leave for NM at the end of July. I would also like this to be an excersize in setting a template from which to work with on future videos.
Steve
