I think one of the saddest things to happen since I was a kid is the demise of using the right tool_s_. The idea that something should be this _or_ that is limited thinking, advanced by those who're more interested in squeezing their developer's salaries than in generating revenue.
When I was young and green, it was not unusual to see "jobs" that consisted of parts written in FORTRAN, COBOL, PL/I and RPG. Many jobs used two or three different programming languages. Anyone who owns one of those "unitools" that is supposed to be good for everything knows they're better off with a half-dozen basic tools. The combination screwdriver/pliers/wirecutters/hammer generally sucks at everything and is good for nothing. I don't think it's all that different with code. Sure, you _can_ use C for everything, but it can't be a good idea. Substitute your favorite language for C in the last sentence, and flame away. ;)
I strongly believe that the commoditization of developers is a bad thing. Bad for America, bad for business, and bad for developers. But that's the way things are going.
