SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] Slackware success!
|
Slackware 9.0 install step-by-step:
1. NO WINDOWS PARTITIONS!
2. Set your BIOS to boot from CDROM
3. Boot up from the Slackware CD, press enter to load the default kernel.
4. Press enter to keep the default keyboard map
5. Log in as root, no password (yet)
6. type this to make any existing MBR go away: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1 Yep, that's it. That MBR is gone. Obviously, you have to be root to do this.
7. Run cfdisk and make your partition(s) and swap partition Primary, boot, 83 Logical, swap, 82
8. Write the partitions to disk. Confirm by typing the word "yes".
9. Reboot to make sure the new partition table is active
10. repeat steps 3, 4 and 5
11. Type setup and press enter.
12. Select ADDSWAP and select your swap partition (should be /dev/hda5)
13. Continue and setup your TARGET drive(s), yes.
14. Select your partition(s). I only made one so it's /dev/hda1. Format it as ext2. OK
15. Select INODE DENSITY. Stay with the defaults for now. 4096 is ok.
16. Select your installation media (the CDROM you just booted from DUH!), auto
17. Let the setup program scan for your CDROM. It will find it.
18. Select your packages and start copying to your hard drive.
If you have more than 2GB of drive space, just do a default install and let it load everything. If not, then select your packages and use the menus to select what you need.
I left out the following from my installation: GNOME fvwm fvwm95 Apache MySQL DNS Server Samba Mozilla (or Netscape, why have both?) RPM (it's a RedHat tool, use tar -zxvf like real men do) All text editors except vi, emacs, and pine All games (download or install later) All FAQ's and HOW-TO's (get them online) Do we really need teTex and tcl???
19. Continue with your package selection and wait, wait, wait until it's all done.
20. THE MOMENT OF TRUTH: Installing the Linux Kernel, if you gotten this far, select Skip to use default
21. Create your Boot Disks. or skip it if you're not too concerned about breaking your system.
22. Modem configuration, skip it if you got a WinModem. Do this later.
23. Enable Hot Plug Subsystems. Yes, of course if you have USB stuff to plug in.
24. THE LILO SECTION: This makes or breaks me and my installation... Do a simple install first... pray.
25. CONFIGURE THE FRAME BUFFER CONSOLE? I don't really care. select the standard to be safe.
26. Optional LILO parameters? I certainly hope not! Skip this nonsense.
27. THE OTHER LILO QUESTION: Why do they torture us thus? Root, Floppy or MBR???
I don't honestly know. As I hover over the keyboard trying to decide... Options 1 and 2 are the safest acording to the text. I really should go for the MBR selection. I don't know yet.
Select MBR because we have no other OS installed (still praying)
28. MOUSE CONFIGURATION: Mouse config? Who cares??? We can play with this later. Go default PS/2
29. GPM Config? Nice, but I only have 32MB of RAM. So use it if you want to. I won't.
30. Configure the network. Yes, pick a silly hostname and an even sillier domain name
31. DHCP is the best bet for everything. Loopback is if you don't intend to network your PC.
32. no DHCP hostname
33. Did you run PCMCIA before running setup? I forgot. Let them probe for a network card. They never find the right one anyway. You could jump to another terminal and try running PCMCIA and then re-config the network settings. Not a big deal. Move on. Get over it.
34. SENDMAIL CONFIG: SMTP
35. NO CUSTOM SCREEN FONTS! skip this nonsense.
36. Hardware clock. leave the default setting.
37. TIMEZONE: US Eastern
38. KDE, of course.
39. set the root password
40. Exit out of SETUP and REBOOT!. Cross your fingers and light candles...
YES!!!! BOOTS!!! ASKS ME FOR PASSWORD!!!
41. create a user (never play around as root) adduser
41. login as the user you created
42. type startx and setup KDE
done. fin. mision cumplida.
