SUBJECT | Re: [hangout] We got into the THE ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE as A Exhibtor

This is great.
We should try to get as many of us there as possible.
So far I have heard interest from Joe Maffia and Adam Kosmin.
Linux-loaded laptops are welcome. We will be using my desktop for the demonstrations.
Selso,
Could we please change the titles of the presentations?
>1.Understanding the philosophy of Free Software (30 min) at 9am I think this is a bit rough. This should not be an individual talk but rather the basis of all the other talks. >2.The Difference between GNU/Linux and Windows (30 min) NO. you are walking into a he-said she-said this is a bad idea >3.The Secret of liberty integration vs Proprietary integration of >technology in subjects and how it can affect you. (30 - 45min) What the H___ does this mean?
First I think it would be a good idea to make sure that all our talks are entitled something like Free Software: Empowerment for the Students
As a replacement for the first three (philosophy) talks. How about: (ruben's suggestion is also good)
1.The GNU/Linux system --the most compatible operating system in the world. Where we will discuss hardware recycling, X-window and terminal servers, networking and routing in a general way. To try to convey the idea that technological sophistication does not necessarily come in a corporate handout with strings attached, but can be created from the ground up, by empowered passionate people. >4.The GIMP Photoshops Enemy (15 -30 Min) Don't say enemy. How about: 2. Unleashing your computers full potential in the digital arts using the GIMP. (30-45min) >5.Open Office for desktop publisher (30-45 min) 3. Open Office for desktop publishing (30-45 min) >6.Anything 3D can do Blender can do better.(30 -45 min) This is also he-said she-said. How about: 4. Blender Powerfull 3D modeling, animation and rendering >And if there is enough time left we would like to demonstrate >7. Kino DV video editing system 5. Kino DV video editing system (the problem with video is that it is a patent encumbered nightmare, from the firewire drivers themselves to the countless horrors of the dvd format, through the long lists of proprietary codecs. There is the possibility of doing many things with video on free systems, but this is definitely an area where free programmers have been hampered by exclusionary practices. A disscussion of video and free software requires a discussion about the necessity of open specifications and formats in a free society.
6. In a school setting shouldn't there be some talk of programming or web-servers, blog, or slash servers. This is a major part of our free software in education initiative. Don't just teach kids word, teach them what a computer is.
Also, mention things like the gutenberg project (all public domain classics in text version on a disk)
Of course we can make as many comments about the deficiencies of proprietary systems through out all the presentations. I don't think it is wise to use these in our titles.
