MS announced that they were licensing Unix source from SCO for use in their own products. They obviously don't have much need for that license. They announced the license on a Sunday, one business day after SCO announced that it was sending threatening letters to "Fortune 1500" companies. They didn't take time for their attorneys to research SCO's claim. Their announcement repeats their "respect for intellectual property" line.
So, it's pretty clear that this was all a set piece timed to play out in the press.
