I've remained silent the discussions on the educational committee due to being very busy. But a meeting will posted for Thursday May 29th 2003 at 6:30pm - 9:30pm. I am listing what has been done so far by the committee and what needs to be done. More will be listed and discussed at the meeting as i remember. if you like to he people can email me at selsok-at-nylxs.com
What Has Been Done
1 Our contact at Concord : Rob as most of you who are involved in the educational committee is our contact who has helped and continue to help us 1st understand the of the city's educational system, 2nd Make allies in the educational community, 3rd He got us the opportunity to be a part of the alternative technology conference that allowed us to make connections and gather information on the (for lack of a better word) ignorance of teachers, teaching technology.
2 NYLXS has been able to make contact with people in the old board of education and they would like to help us. a list of names will be posted later
3 NYLXS education committee head Selso DaSilva will be giving free classes on computer repair - networking on the lower east side as an outreach project to get more attention drawn to the Free Software community.
4 NYLXS are having talks with NY computer technology USA, corp a computer whole sale and retail store that would like to help us educate people in the community. They have a basement that they would be willing to let us use.
5 NYLXS are having talks with PC Learn (www.pclearn.com) to work out a deal to use there facility to do classes. (the idea $300 per students we make sure we get 10 that is $3000. $800 goes to the teacher, $1000 goes to NYLXS, $200 for the education committee piety cash fund and $1000 to the facility.)
6 3 out of 12 Free tutorial articles to help with more outreach has been written. 1 on the GIMP, 1 One on 3d and one on Open office
7 Talks with computer companies and any company that would like to donate computer hardware to NYLXS are in the work.
8 the creation of NYLXS cd labels for the purpose of advertising NYLXS (www.nylxs.com/docs/edu_files/nylxs_knoppix.sxw)
9 Thank you Dave for the Draft proposal for the teachers
10 A draft educational proposal has been written and posted
What Needs to be done
1 At concord: Rob is going to allow us to put up a demo splash dot server, if anyone would like to help, and find prewritten code that we can use would be helpful.
2 The arrangement of free demo classes to the public.
3 A review for a Course layout incorporating the current classes and creating a few more.
4 A creation of tests for our classes so we can certify people and show companies that we are a serious institution
5 A serious though on buying CD and labels
6 Fine tune the proposals for the BOE
