SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] FSCC- Tuesday Minutes
|
Greetings,
I wanted to post a follow-up to yesterday's FSCC Noon Meeting. We had a good discussion and have plotted a course of action. We will need input and volunteers. The minutes were as follows:
BIZ DEMO- We outlined a proposed schedule of subject matter. This is geared at existing businesses who may or may not have an installed platform already in existence, which, is most probably proprietary. Strategically we felt that evangelizing that a business should rip out any existing installed base (read: investment) would not be most beneficial to us or them. Most companies are already entangled in Proprietary systems and will look to keeping their business running safely and smoothly by continuing to use what they have already invested in while migrating where and when they can until fully freed. We decided taking the approach of illuminating companies on the ability to supplant proprietary technologies as they see fit and educating and aiding in migrating them from proprietary to FOSS would be the most welcomed approach to business' ears. Considering this, I propose the folowing layout of a Demo: -TCO Study -Reuse of hardware benefits -Proprietary vs. FOSS cost analysis -Hidden costs of Proprietary solutions (i.e.- License management, SBA issues)
-FOSS Desktop Solutions -Complete FOSS Solutions -SuSe and Crossover Plugins -Evolution and Exchange Plugins
-Harnessing FOSS in your Environment Today -FOSS Applications on a proprietary platform -SAMBA, Apache, Sendmail, etc. -Open Office -Mozilla -Many others
-Systems and Network Security -FOSS security tools and configuration -Snort, tcpDump, etc.
I welcome and comments, questions or suggestions to this format. I am also looking for leads to presenters as I think many from past demos are no longer around.
DEMO VENUE- This will take some reaching out by myself to institutions in NYC. A "top-of-the-head" list includes: Katherine Gibbs, Pace U., Baruch College, NYU, Stuyvesant HS, Lower Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, Uniform.org. If anyone has any other suggestions or personal contacts at those listed or others please let me know ASAP.
DEMO MARKETING- This is THE MOST IMPORTANT issue in regards to the Demo. We want business owners and decision makers, NOT students interested in FOSS (though all are welcomed). We will need to lean heavily on the PR Committee (your time to shine guys! ;) to advertise the Business Demo. We felt places like The Voice, PennySavers, LUG's/Cassandra's Calender, Neighborhood Papers (i.e.- Brooklyn Spectator, Staten Island Advance) and cable TV's NY1 and Public Access should be targeted along with the PR Committee's standard M.O. ***WITHOUT PROPER MARKETING AND ATTENDANCE BY THE DESIRED AUDIENCE THIS IS ALL A COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME AND RESOURCES. AGAIN, MARKETING IS THE NUMERO UNO SUCCESS FACTOR OF THIS DEMO!***
DEMO DATE- Considering the marketing and venue work requirements it was felt that Two Months leeway time is needed for proper preparation and execution. At this point it's TBA until a venue is secured, then the Marketing Machine must fire from the starting line. This would mean begin thinking about marketing NOW so that when a date is set we have two full months to voice our message, not scramble and use one month to get situated and another to advertise. We need marketing to be at: "Ready-Set..." -and waiting for "GO!".
EVENING FSCC MEETINGS- We closed the session with discussion of our Evening FSCC Meetings. Wednesdays were suggested although there seems it may conflict with classes. I feel Mondays is tough as it is a night most people who work just want to go home and crash from the Monday Blues. Thursdays are busy for lots of people. So, we are tentative for Tuesday eves. Perhaps we can flex with Wednesdays as some Tuesdays will not work for me (I take Public Speaking every other Tuesday eve). If this works for Evan, our generous space provider, we can just pre-announce the day a week in advance. Rather than double up FSCC meetings on Tuesdays perhaps we can shift the Noon Meetings to Thursdays or another day that works with Joe or generous space provider at R&M. Suggestions are welcomed and, in fact, solicited. Night space is at 57th St. and Lexington Ave from 6:30-8:30pm
Overall it was a productive meeting and the first of many. Please get back with any and all comments, queries or suggestions on any and all of the Minutes.
Thanks You.
