I didn't respond to this when you posted it, even though it angered me.
Marco, sorry you were angered. I reluctantly had to use Quark because I could not get the results I needed in OO or Scribus. I really tried and wanted to do this with free software.
You never make it clear what problems you are having with OO. 'just not there yet' is not alot of information.
The existing logo, .png file, prints out all rough and pixelated on a laser printer. So, I had to recreate it in Illustartor so it could be useful. Then after importing it into Scribus I needed a white picture background in the picture box to print. This conflicted with the design. Scribus is the best free software pagelayout application but it still has lots of little bugs that need addressing like the one stated. OO is not page layout program. It's for word processing and does not give you complete control you need to do higher end work; things like paragraph formatting, leading, kerning, text flow and picture placement.
For the flyer you did, I can't for the life of me understand what was so hard that you had to go back to illustrator.
Illustrator was used to recreate the logo so it is now in a useful .eps vector file. OO draw does not do this well, fast or easily.
I have the feeling that you do not use draw, but use writer. To get to draw you go to file -> new -> drawing. Then you create text blocks and import images, you can make groups, have grids and rulers. Right clicking on an object is the shortcut to getting a menu that allows fine grained font effects, and absolute sizing and positioning.
I'm aware of draw. It is not that useful because again you don't have ease and total control.
I made a color flyer for myself just today, completely in OO:

Tell me what you think,
I'll check this out when I get back to NYC and have a machine that can deal with eps files.
I think the biggest problem here is that no one in NYLXS has the print production background that I have and understands what is production quality and what is just stuff on a page. You saw the time consumed trying to do the folder in free software and although it was the best we could do it is not what we wanted from a design/production standpoint. Doing this kind of work with the current free software available is like building a house without using power tools. Yes, you can eventually get it done but not without a major time investment and lots of limitations.
If we want to project a professional image, we need to start with the material taht is presented. No matter how small it is. It can't keep looking like it was thrown together at the last moment and the style needs to be consistent.
