SUBJECT | Re: [hangout] Re: Proposed PR process resolution

I would suggest separating those resources that are internal (intended for members) and external (intended for public consumption). Guess which category would be under the supervision of Public Relations?
This stuff is organization 101. I bring it up to address concerns about just how real NYLXS is. Anyone can write scathing letters about Jay or Brett anytime they want to, BUT they cannot put an NYLXS imprint on their message using this system. They write as themselves, private citizens, and can reference their work with NYLXS but cannot write on behalf of the organization. Simple enough.
Now, if NYFairUse is a part of NYLXS then any public statements directly connected to NYFairUse have to go through PR. If there is no relationship between the groups then anything goes. If you think this is censorship, guess what -- you are right! It's the kind of censorship that every half-assed organization has, that prevents a company's president from getting up on a podium and saying "I'm the President of Microsoft, and I like having sex with livestock! We all do, at out annual company animal sodomy picnic!"
Yes, it's unfortunate that things like common sense need to be reduced to formal procedures and codes of practice, but then common sense isn't especially common. Either way, most groups regard being safe as better than being sorry -- especially where accountability is concerned. If someone speaks on behalf of an organization, the entire organization is liable for their words and conduct. In a perfect world when you show up for a new job you wouldn't have to sign any documents and read any policy manuals. Due to the imperfections I perceive in the world around me, I find myself deeply concerned that NYLXS has so few controls in place. Unless they do, and nobody told me about it -- but that in itself is a sign of systemic failure!
