SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] Puppet President and Major Structural Problems
|
Ruben, I am afraid that Dave makes some very valid points. Every reasonable person who gets some knowledge about how NYLXS works would come to the same conclusion. Just like every resonable person who pokes around the webserver gasps, "what a mess".
NYLXS is very far from a democracy. You have absolute control and refuse to give up the reigns.
You personally have the passwords to every domain which had been in question. You even managed to steal the password to nylxs.org before I had a chance to change it, by reading Joe Maffia's email which I find inconceivable and just smells really wrong.
You are also the only person to have root access to the server, meaning that no matter what anyone does you are the ultimate censor.
If people felt that they had more control over the parts of the organisation of which they have been put in charge, they would work much much more.
I haven't done very much since I was elected president, because I am a puppet, absolutely everything I would think of doing is ultimatly censored by you. And I'm sorry, but as much as I respect you, this is a major concern.
If you want a vibrant democratic group, NYLXS needs some major structural overhaul, and some sensible proceedings such as those put forth by Dave and Michael about PR.
I would further suggest:
1) a week of website overhaul to implement the templating system I have 90% finished and to fix some weirdnesses such as the date entry on the scheduling page, which makes the entries virtually unuseable by anyone but you. The templating system should allow each commitee head to control a branch of the site.
2) Switching the main site to nylxs.org which is closer to the mission, figuring out how to minimize the hiccup in the google rankings this switch will create.
3) Dedicating a mail server to nylxs.org. So that outgoing mails are not rewritten to www2.mrbrklyn.com. And looking into the possibility of webmail access for the members, or a secure imap server, I have been looking at dovecot recently which I have heard many good things about. Having mail go out as member-at-nylxs.org is an instant advertisement and helps to solidify the organisation.
If you want this group to continue as the Ruben one-man show with whomever you happen to have coaxed along for this week, that's fine also. You have done many things as the Ruben one man show, and I am sure you will continue as you have been doing. Just don't call it a democracy.
