Oh, perhaps you meant "Funk and Wagnall's" dictionary. Unfortunately,
you won't find that definition in the dictionary for quotes or quoting.
But it's correct nonetheless, even if the usage distinction escapes you.
My own opinion is that 'Open Source' may be capitalized, but should not
be placed in quotes unless suggesting that something is not really Open
Source, as that capitalized term refers to the OSI's definition. More
generically, the term 'open source' (lower case) is often used, which is
in my view a Good Thing, because that means it's moving to general use.
I agree that conflating Microsoft's Shared Source with Open Source isn't
a good idea. But in the INQUIRER's defense, I don't believe that article
did so -- quite the opposite, in fact. And in general, I doubt there's a
more critical view of Microsoft and its shenanigans in the online press
than the INQ's, nor one more supportive of Free/Open Source communities.
You are being hyper-sensitive about the title of a brief article (one I
did not write, by the way), and hyper-critical of a sympathetic journal.
By doing so, you risk moving the issue from Microsoft and all it's evils
to free software zealots and their emotional and idealistic approaches
to what should be rational, practical matters of software and economics.
That said, however, I understand your point and I'm sure Mike does too.
Now, simmer down. FOSS should attract users, not alienate its friends.
