Tips: You don't have to give them an email address unless they changed the
rules. I'd use a throwaway address if you are required to give them one.
Also, they are asking for first and last name, but once on the list, it covers
everyone in household. They are asking for first and last name so that they
can mail you confirmation, and so the politicians get a current list of
residents for hitting them up for donations (which is one of the things
allowed, and very convenient, now they have a good list of residents)
I entered "All" for first name, and "Residents" for last name, and it still
worked like a charm. If they reject it now (I doubt it, the confirmation is
printed out using automated printing, folding, mailing equipment as far as I
know, although they may have changed it after the initial demand). They had
something like 400,000 people sign up the day that it went live. They were
doing it by telephone also, and the lines were jammed the first week or more.
They may still do it by telephone, check the first link.
There's a federal list coming out within the next month or two (google it)
The NY list is good in the rest of the US, as telemarketers from other states
are still required to buy the NY list and adhere to it when making calls.
The list is available to them via paper, and media. I doubt they'll take a
chance calling you even if you use All Residents as first and last name, even
if it is invalid, because while they may be trying to call Marco S., if your
number pops up on their database, it might be registered under a different
name, but the number is still on the list. If they call, the fines are
stiff.
You should here the frustration on the rare call we get, when as soon as they
start their pitch, I ask for their name and name of company, you can here
mumbling, then click, hangup.
Telemarketing calls now, after getting on that list, are about one call every
3-4 months, and its usually a pre-recorded "push" call. There's a radio
station on LI that tries this a couple times a year, and a rug cleaning
company I haven't taken the time to nail yet.

somebody sent something about the financial list (Ruben?) to get off of. I
didn't have the time to look at it, and its probably past the deadline. It's
on hangout within the last several months. It should be checked out.
Also, be aware that a deadline passed last year for financial institutions.
Now, your bank, your brokerage company, your credit card company, and other
financial institutions can sell or give away some minimal financial info
about you, such as your name, and you have an account with Smith Barney or
some other place, unless you specifically call them and tell them not to.
I'd get it in writing. You should have received a mailing about it in the
last year. I actually did this for relatives, and didn't get around to doing
it for myself. We contacted banks, all the credit card companies, insurance
companies, brokerages, and more. You really need to do this. And check out
the thing that Ruben posted. It looked like something else just as serious,
but I failed to follow up on it so far.
