OO is a word processing program NOT a page layout one. Although it is useful for doing generic flyers, letters, papers and manuscripts; if you show them to a graphic artist, production artist or designer there reaction would all be the same, "Done In Word."
I didn't see anything done for the expo but I'm guessing it was the usual sub-standard, quality that OO, Word, Corel, etc produce.
I tried doing this in Scribus but for some stupid reason it would not print the logo. So I recreated it in Illustrator and it printed fine but you needed to have a white background in the picture box which lead to other design problems. Plus Scribus doesn't have, at least anywhere that I could see, a spell check; which was needed. You could not control and flow text, graphics and elements the way I did in OO easily. After trying for many hours it was just a plain waste of time when I did what needed doing in about an hour.
Sorry to say that quality graphic design is still not supported well enough by Free Software to be of any real value. I also feel that if NYLXS wants to be considered a true professional organization we need to produce literature that reflects this. After all, are you going to fork over your hard earned $$$ to someone who's promotional material looks like his kid did it.
Believe me, if I could get the results from Srcibus, GIMP and a vector drawing program that I need; I'm there. I've been searching for this for 5 years and it's just not there yet.
