It's a shame we don't have a regular well supported distro that has been configured specifically for kids. I recall there is a "linux for kids" project, but it mostly a place to collect educational software that runs under GNU/Linux. There is also "debian for kids", but even I would take some pause before considering that as a solution in it's present state.
