SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] Upcoming NYLXS events this month
|
NYLXS has had some invigorating board meetings of late, and we have a large plate of activities in the coming month. So many thing are in the works, that I felt it wourth sending a special message to enumerate them.
First: NYLXS is holding it's anual elections in the 3rd week of March with an installment of New Officers stamtish on Monday April 1st.
The election is being overseen by an independent election committee headed by Dave Williams.
We are planning another Business Expo, hopeully for May,m this time lead by the NYLXS/Free Software Chamber of Commerce at the Katherine Gibbs School. Thanks for Bruce Ingalls for his help with this.
The Free Software Chamber of Commerce meets Tuesdays for Business Networking. Let's make a buck!
NYLXS's NY Fair Use is starting a political push to o-en up City Givernment for Free Software. We will start by going to Wahington DC for the egov-OS meeting. This meeting is SUPPOSED to be a marketing and information advocacy meeting for Free Software in Governemnt. However, the organizers have bit the Free Software community in the tush and invited Microsoft to sit on the panel. We will be going to DC dressed in Revolutionary garb to protest the organizers, who are giving valuable time and space to the most anti-competitive business in the world. We are meeting for that this Sunday at Juniors for an 11AM brunch.
We will follow that up the next week with a protest at City Hall with the slogan "Bloomberg ues free software in his business, why not NY?"
Our Free Software in Schools program is going full tilt, with meetings next week with local districts in Canarsie about Free Software. Our member, Selso DeSalvio is helping to meeting these officials and City Council members. Charles Nardino is runnign this initiative. We are writing a ciricilum for Teachers on 'Technology in Education - what you need to teach you students for tomorrow'.
The NYLXS Quartly Journal is going to be published on paper. We have a call for papers and will pay $50 for each article. Subscriptions will be $25 a year. The HTML format will remain for free on the net.
Classes are going full tilt. GNU/Linux 1 is graduating with about 10 students. Their graduation Installfest is likely to be scheduled for March 2nd at the Jewish Community Center of the Upper West Side of Manhattan. A confirmation on this will liely be tomorrow.
Perl 2, Unix 2, and GNU/Linux 2 will be offered in March. See the Free Software Institute Schedule for deatils.
Joe Maffia will be giving a presentation after Tax Season on accounting with Free Software, how to use SQL-Ledger. This will likely be at the NYLXS clubhouse at the Killarny Rose in Lower Manhattan.
NY Fair Use is also gearing up for another attack run on Representitive Tony Weiner. Plans for this will be presented at the Brunch.
Sam Hiser and Ruben Safir will be teaming up in March to write an article on Open Office and the Database conectivity.
And that about covers our planned activity!
See everyone around.
Ruben
