I included a copy of the "The Age" link in a recent message to hangout. I haven't had a chance to look at all the URIs submitted by Mr. Hubbard, but I did see the reactions of many Australian Linux users when the conference was announced (on various weblogs). It seems that their government was very involved in creating this conference, as opposed to a private policy or advocacy group. As a result they insisted on giving Microsoft a strong presence, and simply couldn't understand why this wouldn't make sense.
The reactions of attendees mentioned in the article were mostly relief that it wasn't an advocacy event (something about it not being "evangelical"). Apparently the people attending just wanted a pleasant afternoon out of the office, and weren't interested in learning about Open Source specifically. My impression is that Microsoft wins just by being there. Even if they don't really say much of anything, it is a strategy of appearing conciliatory and peripherally involved in Open Source, which is wrong on both counts. It serves their purpose, even if the reaction is negative (no such thing as bad press and all that). Some of you may have heard of the slogan "embrace and extend".
Australian advocates didn't really have any choice about this conference, except to protest or reject it. Either way, it appears to be a dangerous folly to me, and one that will result in harmful compromises by people looking for personal gain.
