<meeting. No full account by any of the score or so particpants has been published as far as I know. New Yorkers for Fair Use may publish some account.>>
New Yorkers for Fair Use did not do down there because it was private, and it was enlarged thanks to Jay's ego troubles needing a bigger audience, rather than having an effective small meeting which would have show that NY Fair Use was effective at making a sellable political pitch and could negotiate.
The reports from the Spetember meeting was that, it turned out as I expected...
Jay smoozed with everyone and made them laugh. Public Knowledge fuddled and bungled the message that NY Fair Use so painfully put forward. The librarians distanced themselves from everyone else and failed to make the generalized case, and Bret Wynkoop wa cut short in his presentation by the librarians because too many people had to talk.
So Jay's unauthorized 'enhancement' of the meeting and Bret's refusal to follow directions essentially was a backward step for both the agenda and the organization.
Anyone can claim to represent anything, and there is a limit too what can be done to stop people from misrepresenting a group or an action.
It's very much like Tony Stanco creating this egov-OS and inviting Microsoft. It's an uphill battle to get people to stop misapropiating efforts and individuals.
In this case, Jay is misrepresenting himself as a member of NY Fair Use. NY Fair Use's entire history is now listed on the NY fair Use website at http://fairuse.nylxs.com/history.html
<private ownership of computers and private use of computers and private,>>
This is true. Provate ownerhip of MEDIA and the systems which are used to view them is the constitutional guarantee which allows for freedom, both Free Software freedom, economic freedom and political freedom
That is why I created the slogan, "We are the Stakeholders", and "DRM is Theft".
The fundemental idea was to beat back the propaganda by one Jack Valenti.
In this picutre here: http://www.mccullagh.org/image/d30-23/geektivists-interrupting-1.html
You see me orchastrating the tactics of NY Fair Use. Vinnie spot out and pushed us to the end of the rope of Philips Bond's patients, but Jack Valenti conceeded to allow us a few words I was trying to get them to let Richard Stallman have a word about the issue since Bond claimed that he wanted the best minds in the computer field to have their say on this matter. I was addresing at this point Mr Bond. Incidently, this was a mear 24 hours after I touched down from the plain in NYC from Europe which I presented another speach for Fair Use for NYFairUse which is listed here:
http://www.nylxs.com/events/biggertent.txt and can be heard on the Radio Show.
BTW - this strategy was resisted by Jay up until the 17th of July. He didn't agree that it was essential for complete ownership of digital media by the purchaser. It was his opinion, until then, that companies should be allowed to build closed systems if they choose to, as long as it didn't affect computers.
My final instructions on the July 17th broke the dead lock which was taking place without my presense in NY that week. Al kinds of long verbose and ineffective white papers were being suggested and demonstrations was planned. But the action was INSIDE the room, not outside. This link was my instructions to the Organization from Europe, demonstrating AGAIN, that I am the founder and leader of NY Fair Use and that when organized, we can be effective:

Dear Seth and Everyone
Bonjour Moisoir from Bordaux.
Comment allez vous
What's cooking folks. It's been the experience of NY Fairuse, that without exception, compicqting the slogqns with to many cross messages dilutes expodentially the clearity of the message. Sometimes it is very important to present broad, and even diverse messages, with foundation documentation and cross references. However, under the limited conditions of direct political action, especially when presenting a protest, focusing on a single slogan and argument under these conditions is critical to getting any real messurable results.
Now, as I see it, we are trying to gain two results here, dependng upon if we gain real access or not to the conference room.
If we get into the confereence room, our goal is to tell the Commerce department that as the Stqkeholders, that we expect to be included in all discussions of DRM because of the adverse affect it has on our property rights to our media and the potential for wiretapping ect. And then we want to come back and repeat that we demand this as we are the Stakeholders!
If we don't gain access, then we are reduced to protesting. Under those circumstances, we need to be especially careful to focus on the phrase "We are the stakeholders - DRM is theft!". The reason for this is because the only goal we can realistically expect is that the NY Times will print the words "We are the stakeholders and DRM is theft."
Anything which dilutes these goals blunts our effectiviness, not IN THEORY but IN FACT.
PLEASE FOCUS on these two slogans.
I hope to be dressed like George Washington for this :)
Moi Bien

My instructions were followed, nearly down to the letter, and it produced a wonderful result. It was depressing and sad to see everything break down as we returned to New York. A lot of time has been wasted in this regard, and it continues to be wasted. I struggled with the birth of NY Fair Use for many months of unapreciated work, and I was able to lead Israel out of Egypt, but I couldn't prevent the worship of the Golden Calf. If I had been smarter or a better leader, i guess I would have seen it coming, but I couldn't see it until finally Bret completely broke with everything NYLXS did and NYFairUse did.
As Marco points out, however, the past is the past, and we must focus on the future. We have never disrupted whatever Brett and Jay wants to do, because we find that not useful and hurtful to others. However, NY Fair Use is now folded under NYLXS, and it is continueing. We recovered nicely from the dispruption by spending over 3 hours talking to members of the House IP subcommittee. Clearly, it is a bad tactic to play wack the mole, and the right time and places have to be picked for effective political action.
NY Fair Use seperated itself from the run of the mill political talking head gibberish because it's grass roots, aimed at Soccer Moms, it i disiplined and bold in it's actions.
We leave for others the endles stream of white papers and word twisting. We are focused on the essential elelments of truth in which everyone can relate.
As such, papers like this one on P2P http://fairuse.nylxs.com/, starting with the Constitution, is simple and direct in it's language. It reiterates over the slogans which will carry us into the next few years on this arguement
We are the stakeholders DRM is theft.
Our organization published the first works with these phases which are increasingly making its way into the public lexicon....but not as quickly as it should have if Jay and Brett wouldn't have put their egos over the welfare of the movement.
<reading out the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution in front of the eGov* conference might help remind some newspaper folk, and even some goverment officials, that we are still America, and we vote, and our patience is not without limit.>>
Obviously now your just treading water on my ideas, which I've thought of as early as before NY Fair Use's existence and now have been put quitely into action with the help of some Broadway people. I was trying to keep it quite because I figured your just disrupt our meeting and interfer with our efforts, as you have in the past.
I'm not, however, going to lead 100 people down there, because it's my expereince that it looses it's effectivenes and because the action can not be adequately orchestrated. It just becoms a mob without a clear mesage and which can not make a clear enough point.
A 100 people marching in a nation of 300,00,000 is not more effective than an organized core properly placed and trained. And in this regard, Stanly is right.
As I was quoted as saying in Grant Gross's article: http://www.idg.com.hk/cw/readstory.asp?aid=20030213005
NY Fair Use will show up and be forceful but polite. Their is such a thing. We did it at the DOC and we will do it again here.

If your going to quote me like this in your sig, you should at least give me credit. In addition, I'm asking you AGAIN and publically to take down the NYFairUse mirrow at http://www.nyfairuse.org which is over 90% my copyrighted material and to return both nyfairuse.org and nylxs.org back to their parent organization. The continued abuse of others works is not making points on any of these issues.
If you had scrupples and you don't like my running of NY Fair Use, you should just do the honorable thing and create a new name and organzition and to give us back our brands. This was what I DID when I disagreed with the methods of organization of NYLUG. And if you had a thread of integrety, you would do the same.
Jay, I've removed you from the NYLXS mailing list, because at this junction I see you as intentionally trying to obstruct NYLXS's organizational efforts.
Please don't disrupt our meeting as well. Ruben -- __________________________ Brooklyn Linux Solutions __________________________ DRM is THEFT - We are the STAKEHOLDERS http://fairuse.nylxs.com
