Strangly enough, while it is entertaining to catch MS with their pants down, I'm not really concerned about making MS look foolish. I've been accused in this thread of being an Anti-MS zeolot. In truth, I don't care about MS at all. I'm not proposing that we storm PC World with protests. I'm strictly interested in MS's record with regard to Free Software, and if their contribution at egovos is benificial to the NYLXS membership or the if MS can positively contribute to presenting the political case necessary to convince government to adopt FS broadly.
MS fails the first condition, making the second one irrelevent.
MS is not a contributer to Open Source or Free Software, and should have been summarly rejected as a presenter on that basis alone. They are simply not qualified to make a presentation at the event. The time they use yaking to the Press and the Conference and to particpants is better allocated to an organization with a real stake in the development of Free Software and it's broad adoption in business and government.
They should be as quickly summarly reject as McDonolds would be. In fact, since they are against the adoption of Free Software, the rejection should be that much faster.
It is Bruce's contention that MS deserves some sort of special treament. But no case for this is being made. Microsoft hasn't EARNED their way onto the panel and a different criteria is being used to evaluate their participation than other legitimate FS groups which have real FS products and services to pitch. This is bad for my membership.
