I went to SOBRO. The facilities are clean and nice in a "full color walls" type of way and the rent is quite low, especially considering that the shared internet connections and computer rooms are included.
I met Rachel Strieter (assistant director) and Erica Powell who both had fond memories of Mr. Maffia.
I feel I faithfully represented our group. Unfortunately I feel that I could not get across to the directors the importance of training these first time entrepreneurs in free software on the Desktop. Rachel put me right into contact with two of the present tenents of the more technology literate companies :
David Derryck of NexGen Communications and George Williams Technology Consultant with Ujamaa Communications
They are both extremely interested in free software. I have already exchanged emails with George. All of the tenants I talked to were very excited about linux and free software, the two above are likely to come to meetings . The directors are another issue, these are people with a mission the place is already all Windowed up.
I did ask Erica about the other organisations who are in the other centers sponsored by Digital NYC in Queens and Brooklyn. They have communication channels, so any documentation we get to SOBRO will get sent on to the other groups. I think we can make a strong pitch.
Our next step would be to get the documentation printed, and sent out. The quotes I have so far are unreasonably expensive. I will continue to get quotes from the other printers, and will have at least an Open Office format brochure by the end of the week. The folder may be beyond our means right now.
