SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] Letter to the Site Editors, Letter to the Magazine Editors

You have published a review of DVD burners on your site and for the December 2002 edition of the magazine.
One of the most important factors for anyone considering a purchase of a DVD burner, or a DVD burner that also supports burning CDs, is whether you can burn DVDs and CDs with the device.
The MPAA has pursued a take no prisoners approach in its quest for "digital rights management", what should more appropriately be called digital restrictions management, or more plainly, drm is theft. Your site has reported on this attack on fair use rights extensively.
A month or two ago, one of the webzines discovered Sony quietly installing drm into the firmware of the media burners. Subsequent to that revelation, further information has come out that brings to light that in addition to manufacturers capitulating to the MPAA and the rest of the entertainment cartel on drm restrictions in CD burners, technology is enabling drm tools to be installed into DVD burners as well. This is being done on DVD burners by changing the wavelength of the laser to a different standard on drm restricted data vs. non-drm restricted data (presumably with one of the drm "flags" we have been hearing about).
Your article lacks this most critical of information. Which of the media burners has drm enabling technology installed in the firmware? Which of the media burners slams the brakes on consumer fair use rights? Whether you believe in drm or not, whether you believe that the lawfully purchased property of consumers should be restricted or stolen, or not, is immaterial. It is the consumers who will be relying on the article you posted to make purchasing decisions. Considering that my next computer will be a sub $250 purchase, the DVD drives you are reviewing are now considered a major purchase. Why have you omitted the most important information of all, will I be able to make copies of my music, my books, my documents, my information?
Please make the necessary corrections and additions to your article, so that I and other consumers can make an informed decision on which DVD burner to spend my hard earned money on.
Thank you.
Vin.
