THE LINUX SOCIETY | November 2002 http://thelinuxsociety.net ******************************************************* The next general meeting of The Linux Society is November 12th (Tuesday)at the NYPC Office at 6:30 PM. The NYPC Offices are located at the New Yorker Hotel (34th Street and 8th Avenue | Suite 1560 | 15th Floor). The topic: Lean and Mean Linux. If linux can run on a 386 with 2 megs of RAM, why does it crawl slowly on a Pentium class machine? We'll present tips on how to make your linux box run faster and better and the traps that slow everything down. It's election time for The Linux Society. Unlike Florida, the rules are simple. We'll conduct elections at the beginning of the meeting for new leadership. All current NYPC members of The Linux Society may vote. You must be present to vote. You must be able to prove current NYPC membership with your membership card or the latest NYPC calender with your name and membership number printed on it.
Not a NYPC member, yet? It's never too late. The November NYPC General Meeting is November 7th at P.S. 41 (11th Street, west of 6th Avenue, NYC) with a special presentation from Steve Dawkins, the creator of the Palm PDA and founder of Visor. Who knows how many goodies he might bring?
The new study group meets November 1st at the NYPC Office 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM. We'll review chapters 6-7: maintaining the filesystem, users and groups. The study schedule is posted on the certification website page. The goal is Linux Professional Institute 101 exam certification by December. Keep in mind the exam is supposed to be updated in November. Check the lpi.org website for the latest information. Everyone should come to the study group AFTER doing the readings and trying at least some of the exercises. The second meeting this month will be November 15th, to review chapters 8-9 (text streams and permissions) of: LPIC Prep Kit 101 General Linux 1 by Theresa Hadden Martinez. I know it's not on the shelves in any New York bookstore. However, the book is available freely off the web in PDF format and is available for special order purchase at Barnes&Noble. I've been assured anyone can get it 3 days after placing the order.
As with all meetings, they're free and open to the public.
Dario Castellanos, Education Director The Linux Society
