ruben hmmm... sounds like your distro has problems. I was using debian which does something wierdly good these days. (I have only had problems trying to link everybody elses apache ssl php... and debian's actually worked)
I may be wrong and it really does suck, it looked easy for me to send a message to myself.
with running things as root yes openssh has to run as root. (unless you want to play with the NSA kernel then it probably does not have to run root as such) That might be fixed when we allow particular functions in a program to be suid then it might not need to be root (how you know when a function goes suid and how to protect against trojan binaries I don't know sounds like it can be scary to me)
apache has always had to start as root and then changes to another account simply because of the security function in the kernel blocking non root accounts from binding to port 80
it perfect nope. everything has trade offs. I would have to say that vmg (velocity made good) can only asymptotically reach your current speed.
