Missile-carrying Predators were first introduced last year in
Afghanistan and have since become an integral part of American
antiterrorism efforts. Operated by remote control and armed with
Hellfire air-to-ground missiles, the Predator can loiter over an area
for a long period of time, relaying live video pictures of a site back
to the United States. Before last year, Predators and other pilotless
aircraft were used solely for surveillance, but the decision to arm them
made it possible for officials to order strikes against suspected
terrorists immediately upon seeing them.
