SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] Followup Action to Congressman Weiner's Meeting last month
|
Joe Grastara and myself met with Congressman Weiner in Washington DC after the hearings over the Berman Bill in September.
On the way home from Washington, Joe and I brainstormed over the most effective next step. We've come to a plan whihc will probibly increase active membership in NY Fair Use and strengthen our hand directly in the home district of Congressman Weiner.
Congressman Weiner sits on the Intellectual Property sub-committee of the house, and is closely aligned with Congressman Berman on several issues. Berman and Weiner have a relationship based on their mutual agreement on Iraq, Israel and foriegn affairs. They both are proponents on Jewish issues and Foriegn Policy. Berman has taken Weiner, who is a more junior member, under his wing. And this is obstructing our ability to get our message to Weiner. In fact, it is likely the reason Weiner is on this sub-committee.
The simplest way to make headway on the DRM and Digital Rights issue, in this regard, is to activate a natural constituency in the district. Our presure to date on this issue has held back reckless agreement on this issue, and I believe that our conversation with the congressman has had some sobbering effect, but not enough. For him, this issue is clearly a political card to trade for Berman co-operation on other matters.
Joe and I decided that the target constituency for us to target is 18-22 year olds in the district, most of whom are not yet active voters, organized or completely aware of the issues. We want to target the High Schools and Colleges within Wieners District, in a consentrated fashion, for both recruitment and letter writing. They are naturally aligned with us on these issues because they trade music and information freely on the internet currently. In addition, most are not yet registered to vote. Our job is to register them to vote and help them to the polls as a single voting block on this issue.
I would like to meet with NY Fair Use and the NYLXS lobbying committee this week and to map out a clear stratergy to target, Midwood High School, Brooklyn College, Kingsborough College, Madison High School and other schools in this area for political action in the next week after the CUNY Demo. We need to target both weekends and Weekdays, and work on recruitment.
I would like to Meet Thursday Night to assemble this plan specifically, and to discuss the events in Washington DC. If your interested, email back on the NY Fair Use mailing list, fairuse-at-mrbrklyn.com
