Monday afternoon, NYLXS kicked off it's first meeting of the
Free Software Chamber of Commerce. Several of the leading Free Software
consultants and business leaders gathered together to map the future of this
initiative, with the goal stimulating business through shared marketing
resources and business planning. Everyone involved was ecstatic at the
potential of opening new markets for free software and polishing the
presentation and commercialization of our skill sets.
The core initiative, as proposed at the meeting, was broken down to 4
major components. Each component is designed to augment each other, and
together they should enable the membership in their finacial goals.
The first initiative is to create a weekly networking meeting for developers
and businesses. This is an open event where individuals who either run
businesses, or Free Software professionals gather weekly for the purposes
of networking. This meeting is not a social gathering.
Each individual at the meeting will introduce themselves, explain their
primary business, list services they wish to bring to network, and then
list any needs they currently need filling.
We will then circle the group again, and tell the group what networking or
meeting. This hopes to function to increase the motivation to network
amoung the group, and to demostrate how networking is benifiting the
group.
The second initative is the joint marketing program. The marketing program
is to create a pull of nicely printed, comercial grade pamphlets and booklets
of Free Software services which can be provided by the network's membership.
The membership will finance the material from a 10% cut of all contracts
developed by the activities lead from the network. In addition to marketing
material, the group will also sponsor standard contract templates, collection
agency services, insurance and legal fees, at group rates. The pulling of these
resources will help drive both the number and size of jobs available to everyone
in the network.
Thirdly, the Free Software Chamber of Commerce will develop new coding
initatives that will be taylored to customer needs according to our experince
with clients expectations. We've come to learn that their is great need for
software additions to current software, as well as a continueing need for
new programs not yet developed. We expect to pay programmers to fill these
needs, in addition to leveraging the current NYLXS programs to meet the need
of the enterprise community.
Lastly, the Network will establish a Code of Ethics for the network
participants. This will accomplish two things. First, it will guarantee
to our clients that our consultants are both ethical in their business dealing
and in their skills. It gives the clients an outside agency to bring complaints
and to have a fair hearing on disputes. Secondly, it assures co-operation
and fair dealings between network members, as well as equatable distribution
of clients and contracts.
The Board granted a new adhock committee for the Free Software Chamber of
Commerce. It will report monthly to the NYLXS board, similarly to the other
committees. In addition, it will be run under the rules and constition of
NYLXS, and it's voting membership. Appointed to the chair of the FSCC is
Dimitar Georgiesky.
