SUBJECT | RE: [hangout] Hardware Source
|
Basically Evan I'm embarking on building a home theater pc, HTPC, that will have TiVo like functionality via mythtv and also be able to handle deinterlacing and running my projector. Plus, I'd like to be able to write code or surf the web while zoning on TV shows if I desire to.
I'm thinking a dual processor board, maybe 2 2gigs, about 512 - 1 gig of ram, at least one large 120 or geater 7200 rpm HD, at least one video capture card (prefer two but wanna make sure the box can handle all the video compressing) with s-video jacks, high end sound card and a decent video card; along with standard USB and Firewire, DVD. The box may need some super cooling fans but the noise should be kept to a bear minimum, after all this will be a HTPC.
I was thinking of using Suse distro as I have an older one and kinda like it, though I'm not married to any one in particular. Prefer to stay away from RedHat.
The goal is to handle lots of recording and playing back of video steams from broadcast and DVD flawlessly. I need to show my MS friends that it can be done with Linux.
