So I tried different settings here and was unable to get the desired result.
Then the simple solution occurred, on the TI laptop you need to press
the fn key to activate some of the "hot key" functions in the MAC OS;
by pressing the fn and f12 key I was able to get all the gimp menus I
wanted under kde.
