I agree!
When you've got to compile something by hand, you're in trouble. What you've got in that case is a Frankenstein system part-packaged and part-handmade. From now on, new packaged software isn't going to acknowledge the existence of the handmade stuff. Like, if you ever want to install another RPM that needs Postgres, it won't install. It will complain about postgres not being installed because you installed it by hand.
Such is life, I'm afraid. The package system will get you everything _but_ the stuff you really care about. What's missing is a package system that acknowledges handmade stuff.
