I have had similar issues with Red Hat and when I started to explore the alternatives I absolutely fell in love (figuratively speaking) with Suse. I really like that the Suse installation puts everything where you and the application developer expect things to go. Also, starting MySQL and PostgreSQL was much easier from Suse. I gave up trying to get MySQL and other applications running on Red Hat when I was a newbie...I still am somewhat of a newbie and have no interest in using something that is hard to configure out of the box and which requires immense amounts of troubleshooting.
I have multiple linux boxes and the only one running Red Hat is my laptop because they had a nice little utility for setting up the Wireless card.
With regards to PHPGroupware, I applaud Ruben for attempting to run it. I hope that he finds success in completing the install and getting it running because it really is a great application. It saddens me that the installation had to be so difficult and really does make me wonder how converts from the Windows world could ever be won when Linux can be so difficult at times and require such in-depth knowledge to debug. On the plus side, if you have the knowledge anything is possible!!
