SUBJECT | Re: [hangout] Domain name registrars
|
I have domains registered with godaddy.com I have over 30 domains registered there. Their web site makes it easy to manage multiple domains, multiple dns servers (must be named servers, not ip addresses), multiple accounts, etc. Managing a large number of domains is easy, and managing domains owned by others is also easy. Domains there cost $8.99 per year last time I checked, with multi-year, multi-domain discounts. They also run specials from time to time. They have just instituted a new method of transferring domains which is easy, painless, and no forms to fill out. Best of all, transfers are now free.
I once had a problem where I couldn't remember some info to access an older account, and they went out of their way to help me. After about three emails, the guy helping me actually gave me his home phone number for further help, since we couldn't syncronize our schedules.
I had Network Solutions now Verisign I think, some years ago, and actually lost a domain name during renewal because of their very shitty service. Impossible to get in touch with them, forms for everything, and very complicated procedures/instructions for filling out the forms. And they cost.
As to ownership of domain, I think godaddy.com has the same policy, you own the domain. I'm not gonna worry about it. I paid them for a year, I control the domain name for the year, and I can transfer it to another company, which is part of what the ownership is all about. I think you can answer the ownership question this way: If you can transfer the domain to another domain organization, you own it. If you can't, then the domain is registered in the name of the domain company, and you are renting it, which is what some domain companies do.
btw, godaddy.com allows up to ten dns servers per domain. If you time it right, you can change web server locations/web server ip addresses without losing any down time on the site. If you do it right.
