Thanks for the link MArco. I think this will work.

Hey Joe,
The project you mentioned uses teh bt8x8 chipsets which have had alot
of active development under linux see :
http://www.metzlerbros.org/bttv.html . I feel that you might have the
solution you are looking for in that project though, I have no
experience with that hardware.
My ati uses another chipset (which is supported by the gatos drivers
http://gatos.sourceforge.net/ ). It does hardware scaling. Mplayer
accesses this really smoothly. Writing to disk is my problem as I don't
yet have a scsi setup.
When the capture card goes to the screen there is hardly any cpu usage
at all, and the image is fine. As for software deinterlacing and
re-scaling thats what that nylug thread was about and there are
numerous reasons why the bandwidth is the clincher. You don't
necessarily have to go to disk, though this has always been my dream,
to have a full digital video editing facility (which would need to
write to disk and read from it at the uncompressed formats) with all
the power of free software.
On that note.
Last night I had a huge succes, and added another link in the chain. I
finally managed to get my own DV videos which I had gotten into the
linux box through firewire, re-encoded into mpeg4. Amazing compression
ratios, amazing quality, free software !! I couldn't be more excited.
I am going to try making mpeg2s which would allow me to make my own
dvds (subtitles work supposedly, and they are working on menus) the
interest is that I could distribute my content in DVD format !!!
Anyway there are many free/not-free issues surrounding digital video
(esp. the formats). All I know is that I used only freely available
(as in came with the linux kernel firewire drivers) stuff and got this
far.
